Anaphora for concepts, kinds, and parts in dynamic interpretation

Abstract

The article deals with anaphoric phenomena that involve concepts, kinds, specimens, parts and totalities. It sketches a theory that explains the use of singular vs. plural kind anaphors that assumes distinct morphosyntactic features for mass vs. count nouns. It shows that concept antecedents are not restricted by anaphoric islands, and proposes that this is due to their name-like character, resulting in the accommodation of their discourse referents. It proposes an implementation within DRT and in compositional dynamic interpretation.
